Building a Lap Steel Guitar

Assembling the guitar

Putting the strings on

Use a medium or heavy string gauge on lap steel guitars. Thread the first string into the bridge, stretch it over the nut to the second tuner and make a sharp bend there. This ensures sufficient reserve for winding it three to four times around the tuner post. Thread the string up to the bend through the first tuner and start turning the peg while holding the string stretched with the other hand. Wind the string on the post so that each new layer is placed below the previous one. Do the same with the other strings. To get the required length reserve, always bend the strings towards the outside at the next tuner. Do this approximately for the two top tuners, which have no next tuner.
